An Alabama state senator and chairman of the Republican party in Roy Moore's home county on Monday said the four women who have accused the former judge of sexual misconduct "deserve the full measure of credibility," AL.com reported.
State Sen. Phil Williams, chairman of the GOP in Etowah County, also said the whole situation "is the worst of humanity on display."
"God help us as we sort through the mess," Williams told AL.com.
Williams' comments come on the same day that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Moore "should step aside" as the Republican candidate to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions in next month's special election.
McConnell's statement Monday was stronger than last week's "if the allegations are true" mantra that he and other Capitol Hill Republicans issued last week.
Worse for Moore, another woman is poised to levy allegations against him later Monday in a press conference arranged by famed attorney Gloria Allred.
Williams wouldn't say whether he believes the accusers or Moore, saying that the women need to be heard, but that it's unfortunate that Moore can't defend himself, given that the statute of limitations has passed.
The accusers "deserve the full measure of credibility that any victim should be given in cases such as these," AL.com quoted Williams.
