Michael Moore: Repeal 'Ancient, Outdated' 2nd Amendment

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore on Wednesday suggested repealing the Second Amendment, which he called "ancient and outdated," in the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas where a gunman killed 58 and injured at least 520 when he fired rounds from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino into a music festival crowd.

Moore, a liberal activist who backed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the presidential election last year, said in a Facebook post the Second Amendment should have the "public's safety ahead of an individual's right."

He recommended that men, in order to purchase a gun, must get spousal approval, plus a waiver from their most recent ex-wife, "or any woman with whom he is currently in a relationship (if he's gay, he must get the waiver from his male spouse/partner)," citing a law in Canada with similar requirements that has "greatly reduced most spousal/domestic gun murders."

Moore also suggested having "state national guards which are made up of citizen soldiers who are called upon in times of natural disasters or other state emergencies."

The amendment would also regulate gun ownership by:

  • Banning all automatic and semi-automatic guns.
  • Limiting guns and clips to hold no more than six bullets.
  • Implementing a fingerprint-trigger recognition system.
  • Mandating gun owners to store weapons at a licensed club or government-regulated gun storage facility.
  • Mandating gun owners to obtain a license like one does to operate a car.
  • Making mental healthcare a top national priority.
  • Restoring funding for studying the gun violence epidemic.

"These are a few of the regulations that can be enacted to both protect society yet not deny hunters and sportsmen their fun," Moore said. "This is the sane approach that meets everyone's needs – everyone, that is, except those of the serial killer, the mass murderer, the violent ex-husband, the disgruntled employee or the disturbed and bullied teenager."
