President Donald Trump sounded unaffected by the personal attacks aimed at him by Elon Musk during a phone call Friday.
The Trump-Musk relationship deteriorated quickly Thursday after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said he was against the "one big, beautiful bill" passed by the House. The sweeping tax cut and spending bill promotes the president's agenda.
"Nothing catches me by surprise. Nothing," Trump told the New York Post about Musk's attacks before quickly pointing to his poll numbers and a better than expected May jobs report.
"The numbers are through the roof, the stock market is up, billions are pouring in from tariffs, and my poll numbers are the highest they've ever been," he told the Post. "Other than that, what can I tell you, right?"
Musk, who led Trump's Department of Government Efficiency until recently, "knew the bill as well as anybody," according to the president.
"The bill is great. It's going to pass, but the bill is great, and it's going be great for everybody, including him," Trump told the Post. "And you see it now. And take a look at what happened today with the job numbers. They're through the roof, and the stock market's up already 600 points."
"This is what I do for a living, OK?"
A senior House GOP aide said Friday that the White House hasn't offered any direction for Congress on how to handle the Trump-Musk rift.
"The White House hasn't asked us to take any shots at Musk or to defend Trump — 'Go after Elon, he's a traitor,'" said the Post source, adding that Trump's team prefers "to take control of the rhythm."
"We revolve around Trump."
The GOP aide added that Musk left his government role May 30 "genuinely shaken" after a disappointing earnings call with Tesla shareholders and fire-bombings of the company's electric cars.
Not only that, DOGE's cuts did not come close to what Musk had projected.
"There's a faction of Congress that's totally opposed to DOGE, and I don't think [Musk] fully realized that," the aide told the Post.
Earlier Friday, Trump told ABC News' Jonathan Karl that Musk "has lost his mind" and added he was "not particularly" interested in talking to the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.
"In a phone conversation this morning, @realDonaldTrump told me @elonmusk is 'the man who has lost his mind.' Trump did not, however, seem angry or even concerned about the feud," Karl posted on X.
"As for reports that there is going to be a Trump/Musk call scheduled for today, Trump told me he is 'not particularly' interested in talking to Musk, although he says Musk wants to talk to him."
