President Donald Trump insists he was “so nice” during a “very nice” condolence call with a young Gold Star widow, disputing claims his remarks to her were insensitive.
In an interview airing Sunday with Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo, pushes back about his comment to Myeshia Johnson that her young husband “knew what he signed up for.”
A clip of the interview was released ahead of the airing, and posted by Deadline.com.
Chief of staff John Kelly “actually couldn’t believe it,” Trump said. “Actually, he said to me ‘Sir, this is not acceptable. This is really not’ –and he knew – I was so nice.”
He also insisted Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson was breaking protocol by listening in on the conversation, which he described as “a very nice call.”
Also during the interview, which focuses largely on his tax plan, Trump says he “thought it was sickening” when Wilson later suggested that White House chief of staff John Kelly defended Trump because he was trying to keep his job.
The interview is airing in two parts, on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” and on Monday on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.”
