White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday "the American people are frustrated" Senate investigators have found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia last year after probing the issue for nearly nine months.
"I think more importantly than the president being frustrated, I think the American people are frustrated," Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing. "It's literally found zero evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia."
The president slammed the Senate Intelligence Committee on Twitter on Thursday after its leaders said Wednesday — nearly nine months into their probe — they have not established any collusion during last year's election.
Sen. Richard Burr, the North Carolina Republican who chairs the committee, and top Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia provided the panel's first major update on its investigation — launched the month of President Trump's inauguration.
"The issue of collusion is still open," Burr told reporters.
"The committee continues to look at all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion," he added. "I am not going to even discuss initial findings, because we haven't any."
Burr and Warner said the panel had interviewed more than 100 witnesses, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner.
More than 100,000 pages of documents have been reviewed, they said.
Committee members also have yet to question witnesses connected to the June 2016 meeting between Kushner, Manafort, and the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., held with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in New York City.
In her response at the briefing, Sanders restated the arduous process the panel has been through in its investigation.
"The Senate Intel Committee told us yesterday that after nearly nine months of investigating — that's included more than 100 interviews, over more than 250 hours, 4,000 pages of transcripts, 100,000 pages of documents, interviewing officials in the intelligence community who wrote the report on Russian election meddling, interviewing Obama administration officials and talking to every Trump campaign official they requested — it's literally found zero evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
"The American people would like them to focus on some other things," she said.
"I know that we certainly have said this all along — and we're glad that, as they continue this process, they're coming to the same conclusion."
