The 2017 Oscars is set to air on Feb. 26, and nominees have been revealed, with three black screenwriters earning nominations for the first time and "La La Land" leading the way with 14 nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s nominees on Tuesday, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs finalized nominations with the help of Academy members, such as Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman and Ken Watanabe, each of whom have either won an Oscar or been nominated for one in the past, E! News noted.
The Oscars appears to be moving away from the racial controversy it was under last year, as the Academy has nominated three black screenwriters all in the same year for the first time in its 89-year history, according to The Wrap.
Barry Jenkins, Tarell McCraney and the late August Wilson are those being nominated.
Together, Jenkins and McCraney wrote the screenplay for “Moonlight,” while Wilson has been nominated for his writing for “Fences.”
Last year, the Academy faced a backlash when no minorities were nominated in acting categories for the second year.
Damien Chazelle’s musical “La La Land,” which did well at the Golden Globes, leads all nominations for the Oscars with 14, tying with "Titanic" (1997) and "All About Eve" (1950) for the most nominations given in Oscars history, Entertainment Weekly noted.
The 2017 Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will be held at the Dolby Theater, airing on ABC at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.
