'Beetlejuice 2' Rumors Bolstered by Michael Keaton Interview Admission

By    |   Friday, 14 February 2014 04:50 PM EST

Actor Michael Keaton says he's been talking to director Tim Burton about a possible "Beetlejuice 2" sequel to their popular 1988 film, he told MTV.

It sounds as if years of rumors that the supernatural comedy will get a sequel might finally have some meat in them. Others in the original, including Winona Ryder, have held out hope it might happen and MTV said the script was started by Seth Grahame-Smith in 2012.

Finally, though, Keaton’s words may make it come true.

“I've e-mailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff," Keaton told MTV. "I always said that's the one thing I'd like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another."

Burton’s possible involvement in the project would mean Keaton is going to be there too.

“Now it looks like he is involved," Keaton told MTV. “And without giving too much away we've talked to each other, and e-mailed each other, and if he's in, it's going to be hard not to be in.”

Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz, confirmed that she was talking about a “Beetlejuice 2” role in Rolling Stone in November. “I'm kind of sworn to secrecy,” she said. “But it sounds like it might be happening.”

And despite that secrecy vow, she said it wouldn’t be a remake.

“It's 27 years later,” Ryder told Rolling Stone. “And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”

Reactions to a second Beetlejuice online were excited.

Others weren’t so sure.
