Texas mom Cheyenne Stuckey was charged in the death of her infant after admitting to being “distracted by Facebook” as the child drowned in the bathtub.
Stuckey was on Facebook Messenger for at least 18 minutes on June 13 while her child, Zayla, was in the tub. She said she left the infant alone for “a few minutes” and returned to find the 6-month-old girl unresponsive and floating in the tub face-down, NBC Dallas Forth Worth reported.
Stuckey wasn’t sure whether she had put a bathtub stopper in the drain, she told police. She admitted that Facebook, another child, and a loud TV all distracted her, and that she tried to save her daughter but didn’t know how, NBC reported.
The infant was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead after she could not be resuscitated. Preliminary autopsy reports showed that Zayla died from drowning, CBS News reported.
Stuckey, 21, was taken into custody and charged with injuring a child. Her bail has not yet been set. Several other children were removed from the home and are now in foster care, CBS reported.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Zayla’s memorial service, and lists her siblings as 4-year-old twin girls and a 2-year-old brother, according to the New York Post.
“Please keep the family and friends in your deepest thoughts and prayers during this fragile time as they struggle to deal with the loss of beautiful baby Zayla,” the page said. “No donation is too small, each and every donation will be greatly appreciated to help prepare to lay their Angel to rest,” the Post reported.
