Colin Kaepernick merchandise is still showing strong sales despite his struggles to find a new NFL home, with the former San Francisco 49er ranking 39th in NFL Players Association sales overall.
Kaepernick is the only unsigned player to be ranked in the top 50 for merchandise sales, and his ranking may give the Baltimore Ravens the confidence they need to decide to sign him, NFL.com reported.
The Ravens are currently polling the public and the team to find out whether signing Kaepernick as a backup quarterback will result in a backlash against them. Kaepernick ignited a firestorm of criticism when he decided to sit, then kneel during the National Anthem before NFL games last year to protest racial inequality and injustice in America.
Kaepernick pledged to donate $1 million of his pay plus everything he received from jersey sales to help improve oppressed communities nationwide. So far, he has donated $700,000, according to Bleacher Report.
Ravens players have voiced support for Kaepernick joining the team in recent days.
“If he’s going to help us win, we have no issues. Not in the locker room. ... Yeah, we want him,” pass-rusher Terrell Suggs said, CBS Sports reported.
“I would love to have him to come challenge some other quarterbacks,” defensive back Ladarius Webb said, according to CBS. “We all know Joe [Flacco] is our guy. We love Mallett. But yeah, we all would like competition around here to make everyone better.”
Flacco last week was dealing with a sore back and Mallett has reportedly struggled in practice.
Some on Twitter questioned Kaepernick’s skill and ability while others wondered how he could still be selling jerseys.
