Newly unsealed documents revealed that an FBI translator secretly married Denis Cuspert, a German rapper turned ISIS terrorist she was sent to investigate in 2014.
Daniela Greene had top-secret security clearance when she traveled to Syria in 2014 to marry Denis Cuspert while telling U.S. officials she was going to Germany to visit family, according to Fox News. Greene was fluent in German.
Greene was assigned to investigate Cuspert in January 2014, and married him in Syria in 2014 even after seeing evidence of his extreme violence, such as videos in which he was seen holding severed heads, Fox reported.
Only about six weeks after marrying Cuspert, who now goes by the name Abu Talha al-Almani, Greene returned to the U.S. regretting her actions. She was arrested and spent two years in prison because of her actions. Greene fully cooperated with the government and the risk of any future crimes was judged to be low, Fox reported.
Cuspert was known in Germany as rapper Deso Dogg. In some of his videos, he praised Osama bin Laden and threatened to kill then-President Barack Obama. He appeared in many ISIS propaganda videos and was considered a top recruiter, CNN reported.
Greene’s two-year sentence was seen as lenient by some prosecuters, and was less than many other punishments received by those who committed terrorism-related acts, CNN reported. A justice department official said that Greene’s sentence was “in line” with other cases, and was reduced because of her cooperation with authorities.
Greene was allowed to plead guilty to less serious charges, including making false statements involving international terrorism. She was released from prison last summer, CNN reported.
