A "Finding Dory" movie trailer possibly showing a lesbian couple has created an LGBT stir on social media, reported
Us Weekly.
The supposed gay couple appears for a matter of seconds midway through the trailer featured on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
There have been similar same-sex partner brouhahas recently for sequels to "Frozen" and "Captain America."
DeGeneres, well known as a lesbian, voices Dory, the main character in the movie which is a sequel to the 2003 Pixar animated movie "Finding Nemo." The trailer posted May 24 by her show has had 3.5 million viewers as of Wednesday.
"A new trailer for 'Finding Dory' was released last week, and over the weekend, fans with a keen eye noticed a couple that appears briefly in the trailer," said
Fox News. "Disney has not commented on whether or not the two women featured momentarily in the trailer are lesbians."
That hasn't stopped many from speculating on social media.
"The possibility of a lesbian couple in 'Finding Dory' has also caused some backlash on Twitter," wrote the website
Heavy.com. "But fans have countered their concern with this fact about the movie — the lead character is voiced by lesbian comedian, Ellen DeGeneres."
Salon said LGBT supporters have posted online petitions for greater visibility by asking Disney to give same-sex partners to popular characters like Elsa in "Frozen" and Steve Rogers in "Captain America."
"If audiences are perhaps jumping the gun in anticipation of this possible milestone, it's because queer people are desperate and hungry for more than we've been given in the past," wrote Salon.
