Jamie Brewer, Actress With Down Syndrome, Struts Runway at Fashion Week

Jamie Brewer, the actress best known for her roles in the "American Horror Story" anthology series on FX, became the first person with Down syndrome to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week on Thursday.

Brewer’s appearance was part of Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” campaign, Today.com reported.

“It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are,” Brewer said, according to Today.

Hammer’s campaign grew from her first show, in which the designer invited a friend in a wheelchair to model for her.

“I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women and one of them happened to be a doctor and a sex therapist who happened to be in wheelchair,” Hammer told Today.com. “It was never intended to be this incredible statement.”

That show led Katie Driscoll, founder of the nonprofit Changing the Face of Beauty, to ask Hammer to feature a role model for her daughter, Grace, who has Down syndrome.

Brewer, 30, wore clothing inspired by her characters on "AHS," according to Cosmopolitan.

Both Brewer and Hammer tweeted about the fashion show Thursday as they got ready.

Twitter users expressed delight in the story.
