Facebook has ordered up a documentary series to follow LaVar Ball’s family as it experiences an even higher level of fame now that his son Lonzo Ball is a Los Angeles Laker.
LaVar Ball, who’s gained notoreity as the quintessential sports parent for being outspoken about the basketball talents of Lonzo Ball and his two younger brothers, and some jeers for his $495 Big Baller Brand athletic shoe, might have been on to something after all, given that one of social media’s juggernauts wants to do a series about the Ball family.
The documentary comes at a time when Facebook is looking to focus more on original video content.
“Our goal is to make Facebook a place where people can come together around video. To help get there, we’re supporting a small group of partners and creators as they experiment with the kinds of shows you can build a community around – from sports to comedy to reality to gaming,” said Nick Grudin, vice president of media partnerships at Facebook.
“We’re focused on episodic shows and helping all our partners understand what works across different verticals and topics,” Grudin added. “We’re funding these shows directly now, but over time we want to help lots of creators make videos funded through revenue sharing products like Ad Break.”
The name of the Ball family documentary series has yet to be revealed and it’s not clear as to how many episodes there will be.
LaVar Ball and Lonzo Ball are the obvious selling points for the series, but the show is expected to feature the other two Ball boys – UCLA-bound LiAngelo and LaMelo, a star basketball player at Chino Hills High School, noted Forbes.
The Ball family has quickly learned to use platforms like Facebook to its advantage.
On the night of the NBA Draft when Lonzo was picked 2nd overall, the Ball family and Lonzo’s agent Harrison Gaines appeared in a Facebook Live video. It garnered 236,000 views and 1,700 comments.
