Ricky Harris, a comedian and actor known for his recent recurring role on Chris Rock's "Everybody Hates Chris," died on Monday. He was 54.
Harris' manager, Cindy Ambers, confirmed the actor's death, and attributed it to a heart attack, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Los Angeles Times, however, said the cause of death is not yet known, and cited Ambers as saying Harris suffered a heart attack two years ago.
Harris’ credits in television and film include “Heat,” “Poetic Justice,” "Moesha," and “Everybody Hates Chris.”
He most recently appeared in FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” according to The Huffington Post.
Harris also worked with his childhood friend Snoop Dogg and rappers Ice Cube and Dr. Dre on several of their albums.
“Lost one of my dear friends today — Ricky Harris,” Snoop Dogg said in a video he posted to Instagram Monday. “Lot of y’all may know him as the comedian, but he was a real dear friend of mine.”
The son of a preacher, Harris grew up in Long Beach where he and Snoop Dogg were in the church choir together as kids, The Associated Press reported.
The 1993 classic movie “Poetic Justice” marked Harris’ film debut.
He also made a name for himself as a comedian, appearing on “Def Comedy Jam” in the 1990s, the LA Times noted.
Harris is survived by his mother, his ex-wife, and two daughters.
Several other entertainers offered their sentiments on social media following Harris’ death.
