Robert S. Mueller III, who led the FBI as director for 12 years, has joined the Washington Speakers Bureau and plans to share with audiences his experiences dealing with national security and terrorism as well as his tips for leadership in the 21st century.

"Leading the transformation of the FBI after September 11 from a domestic crime-fighting force and law enforcement agency to a counterintelligence service with a key role in combating terrorism, Robert Mueller discusses with audiences the critical issues of national security, the growing cyber security threat, and the key role transformation plays in today’s business arena," WSB said in a press release.

Mueller, 69, served as the sixth director of the FBI for the requisite 10-year term starting in 2001, starting just one week before September 11. In 2011, President Barack Obama asked Mueller to stay on for an additional two years. He stepped down earlier this month.

"You will be remembered as one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI and one of the most admired public servants of our time," Obama told Mueller in June as he announced the director's successor. "I know very few people in public life who have shown more integrity, more consistently under more pressure, than Bob Mueller."

Jim Comey, a former deputy attorney general, succeeded Mueller as FBI director.

Mueller graduated from Princeton University in 1966, and then got his master's degree in International Relations from New York University in 1967.

He went on to serve with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals, a Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

After his military service, he earned a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1973 and then worked as a litigator, later becoming a United States Attorney in San Francisco.
