Xbox One Controller Has 40 Innovations, Designed 'For Gamers, by Gamers'

The Xbox One controller is smaller, but better, according to its lead designer Quintin Morris, who said it was "designed for gamers, by gamers."

The new wireless controller, which has more than 40 innovations, includes a new impulse trigger that "delivers fingertip vibration feedback, so you can feel every jolt and crash in high definition," redesigned thumbsticks, and a revamped D-pad (the cross section) to "provide greater precision," according to Xbox.com.

The Xbox One controller also features redesigned contours, a grip surface that wraps around much of its base to provide a more comfortable fit in the user's hands, and a new expansion port that allows for a "high speed data transfer [and] clearer chat audio when using a compatible headset," the website adds.

"First off the battery now exists inside the body of the controller," Morris, an Xbox Senior Product Designer who led the project, said during a recent interview with Xbox’s Graeme Boyd.

"So you're going to be able to get around the controls way faster than you ever have before," Morris said. "So if you're playing 8, 10 hour sessions of whatever game, you'll just be able to play better and focus more on what's happening in the game as opposed to how you're controlling it."

The new Xbox One controller also has new technology that allows for friends to exchange controllers and the system will recognize the player has changed so long as they are in view of the Xbox console.

"We've been working on this for two years and our main goal was to make sure our Xbox One controller was familiar," Morris said when asked if the new controller would feel different to seasoned gamers.

"We talk about the 40 improvements and most of those are fairly small things," Morris adds. "It doesn’t feel like a totally different controller, it feels like a better controller."

According to Morris, the design team responsible for the new controller consisted of 30 people.

"All the people we recruited for all the studies are either just regular gamers or competitive gamers or people who have just been playing the game for a decade," Morris added. "This was designed for gamers, by gamers."
