Almost 90 percent of American voters feel marijuana should be made legal nationwide for either personal use, medical use, or both, according to the results of a new survey.

The wide-ranging Harvard-Harris poll found that 49 percent of voters think marijuana should be legal for personal and medical use, while 37 percent said the same for medical use.

Just 14 percent said the drug should be illegal for all uses.

Fifty-seven percent of the voters surveyed said legalizing marijuana makes societies better.

Just three states and two U.S. territories ban marijuana usage in all forms. California allows marijuana usage and possession and currently has a surplus of the drug because growers are producing too much of it.

A recent Gallup poll found that 45 percent of Americans have tried marijuana.

A report last December, meanwhile, claimed that cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome — an illness tied to marijuana usage — is becoming more prevalent in states that have legalized the drug.
