President Donald Trump should preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy that protects immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as kids, a group of more than 1,300 Catholic educators say.
"We stand with our students who are DACA beneficiaries," the group said in a letter to the Trump administration obtained by U.S. News & World Report.
"Their perseverance, hard work and hopefulness is an example to us as teachers. We witness the obstacles they overcome each day as they pursue their dream of a better life for themselves and their families.
"In facing adversity and uncertainty with grace and hope, they embody the best of our schools, our country and the Catholic tradition."
The educators wrote their "moral mandate" to the White House as a legal challenge by 10 state attorneys general looms. The 10, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, have asked Trump to end the Obama-era program by Sept. 5 or face a federal court challenge.
"Every human being bears within him or her the image of God, which confers upon us a dignity higher than any passport or immigration status," Bishop Mark Seitz, Diocese of El Paso, said in a statement.
