After President Donald Trump disinvited star player Steph Curry to the White House with members of his NBA Championship team, the Golden State Warriors on Saturday afternoon tweeted a statement that they will not, as a team, visit the White House in February.
"We accept that President Trump has made it clear that we are not invited," the team said in its statement, noting that members had intended, as a team, to meet to collaboratively discuss visiting the White House.
"We believe there is nothing more American than our citizens having the right to express themselves freely on matters important to them," the statement continued. "We're disappointed that we did not have an opportunity during this process to share our views or have open dialogue on issues impacting our communities that we felt would be important to raise."
The team's members will still travel to Washington, but will instead use the trip to "celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion, the values that we embrace as an organization," the statement concluded.
Trump posted his tweet after Curry voiced his hesitation to attend the White House meeting. In addition to Curry, Warriors team leader Kevin Durant had also said he would not visit, because "I don't respect who's in office right now."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said on Twitter later Saturday that he was "disappointed" that Golden State would not visit the White House but praised team members for "taking an active role in their communities and continuing to speak out on critically important issues."
