CNN's Tapper Calls Out Reid Over Billionaire Donor Remarks

CNN's Tapper Calls Out Reid Over Billionaire Donor Remarks

By    |   Thursday, 19 June 2014 07:16 PM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's penchant for taking to the Senate floor to bemoan the undue influence of big money in the Republican Party while denying such influence in his own party hasn't escaped the notice of CNN's Jake Tapper.

Tapper on Thursday called out Reid, who earlier in the day said the recent Supreme Court decision allowing large donations has "pitted one side's billionaires against the other side's billionaires —  except one side doesn't have many billionaires."

"The left doesn’t have many billionaire backers? Oh, really?" Tapper quipped. "Well, you could name George Soros, David Shaw, Irwin Jacobs, to name a few."

Tapper then spent the rest of the segment talking about Tom Steyer, the billionaire who has been funding campaigns to oust Republicans labeled by the left as "climate-change deniers."

Steyer also is using his fortune to fight the Keystone XL pipeline.

Steyer has held big-money fundraisers, Tapper noted, for President Barack Obama, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and for Harry Reid.

Reid's latest "rant," Tapper said, sounded like a "populist fight song that may not really be completely on pitch with reality."
