NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee will offer voluntary buyouts to 2,011 state workers in an effort to shore up its budget.
Gov. Phil Bredesen announced Wednesday that he is working on the details of an incentive package to buy out mostly administrative workers beginning in June. If not enough workers take up the offer, involuntary cuts will follow.
Officials with the Tennessee State Employees Association are praising the effort to make the buyouts voluntary.
The layoffs will represent a 5 percent reduction in the state work force.
