Schools who oust college students unmasked as illegal immigrants are violating their academic freedom, a history professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign charges.
Mark Steinberg, who specializes in Russian history and chairs the school's academic freedom and tenure committee, told its members it is important to know where the university stands legally now that Donald Trump, an immigration hardliner, has been elected the nation's 45th president.
"This is clearly a policy question and campuses across the country are discussing this. We don't want to be behind in what is becoming an important national discussion," Steinberg said, according to The Daily Illini.
"This really isn't limited to undocumented students only, not to minimize their importance, but there is also an issue of Muslim students, Muslim faculty and a very large number of immigrants here on temporary visas.
"Having a set of policies in place not just for academic freedom and tenure, but also for safety issues, is very important to our committee."
