DETROIT -- A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Detroit's mayor is firing the city's police chief.
The person says Mayor Dave Bing has told Police Chief James Barren that the chief is being relieved of his duties. The person talked with Barren on Friday.
The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to publicly discuss Barren's dismissal. The person did not know when the dismissal was to become official.
Mayor's office spokeswoman Karen Dumas says there are no announcements regarding police department changes "at this time."
A telephone listing for a James Barren in Detroit wasn't working. A message was left with a police department spokesman.
