8 Christian Colleges That Have Sanctioned LGBTQ Student Groups on Campus

While many Christian universities oppose the LGBTQ lifestyle and same-sex marriage, several major colleges have allowed students to create discussion on the topic.

Institutions such as Biola University have remained resistant to the move to allow official gay organizations on campus, which encouraged some students to start their own unofficial club known as the Biola Queer Underground, The Biola University Chimes reported.

At least eight institutions in the United States that are affiliated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, however, have permitted students to run a club specified for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities as well as their allies.

Here are the schools and their respected student groups.

1. Calvin College
Calvin’s LGBT group is called SAGA for Sexuality and Gender Awareness and is open for LGBT students, allies, and those who wish to know more about gender identity and sexuality topics, according to the school’s website.

2. Campbell University
Campbell’s Common Ground club aims to create unity between the LGBT and heterosexual communities at the college, encourage discussion, and raise awareness of the issues concerning the topic, according to the school’s website.

3. Eastern Mennonite University
EMU’s Safe Space is meant to create a secure place for LGBTQ students to converse and socialize as well as promote equality and justice for the community, according to the school’s website.

4. Eastern University
Eastern’s Students Advocating for Gender Equality, also known as SAGE, concerns itself with increasing awareness of gender and sexuality issues, holding campus events, and increasing social justice, the university’s website noted. Refuge is another group that more specifically provides a support system for LGBTQ students and a place to discuss topics.

5. Fuller Theological Seminary
According to the school’s website, Fuller’s OneTable aims to share a meal once a month to converse about sexuality issues in the LGBT community through a faith perspective.

6. Goshen College
Goshen College’s Advocates aim to educate and foster communication between the LGBTQ and straight communities, according to the school’s website.

7. North Park University
According to the school’s website, Queers and Allies aims to remove stigmas from the community, provides support for students in the LGBTQA community, foment discussions on related topics, and hold events, according to the school's website.

8. Pepperdine University
Graziadio Reaching Out is Pepperdine’s networking and professional group for LGBTA students. The group invites professionals in the gay community to speak at events and promotes inclusion, diversity, and social responsibility, according to the university’s website.
