Gun Ranges in Iowa: 6 Spots for Firearms and Pistol Practice

Iowa has a variety of staffed and unstaffed gun range facilities throughout the state. Pistol and rifle stations, as well as shotgun ranges allow for a safe shooting environment at low or no-cost. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources manages a variety of facilities and there are also many private ranges in the state.

Here are six places for firearms and pistol practice in the state of Iowa:

1. Banner Shooting Range: Located in Warren County south of Des Moines, this range is managed by the Department of Natural Resources. It has two lanes, one features pistol and rifle shooting at 25 and 50 yard distances, while the other extends to 100 yards. It is a fully staffed range with safety equipment available.

2. Charles "Butch" Olofson Shooting Range & Training Center: Located in Polk City, near the public hunting land at Big Creek State Park. This range offers classes for beginners, but does not rent guns. There are two 50 yard and one 100 yard ranges for pistol, rifle, shotgun slug and muzzle loader shooting. The shooting range also has facilities for sporting clays. This gun range includes a target in its range fees.

"Great place to go to. Everyone is very friendly and willing to assist and educate about any problem or questions you might have," writes a reviewer on Facebook.

3. Central Iowa Shooting Sports: Located in Indianola, this is the perfect place for beginners. This range provides instruction and shooting opportunities for a variety of interests. They teach recreation and competitive pistol shooting and have teachers to help with historical reenactment shooting. The gun range provides equipment rental for people taking classes.

4. Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting Range: Located in Swisher, this shooting range has a pistol and rifle range. It is run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and it is not staffed.

5. Steelclay Shooting Sports and Game Preserve: Located in Eddyville, this private range is open to the public for skeet, 5 stand, and sporting shooting. They also have Pheasant and Chuckar hunting and other hunting plans available upon request. Guide and dogs are available hourly or half day rates.

"They shot with me, introduced me to other local shooter, squadded me, let me run a tab for my shooting and shells and showed me an overall GREAT time!" writes a reviewer on Yelp.

6. Ottercreek Sportsmans Club: Located in Cedar Rapids, this range is a skeet and trap shooting club which offers opportunities for non-members to shoot. The club offers competition shooting. It does not offer pistol or rifle ranges and does not rent pistols or rifles for use. The club also offers classes in trapshooting.

"Nice facility with a great friendly staff. We had a great day of skeet and trap shooting. I’m glad I became a member," writes a reviewer on Facebook.
