Las Vegas Staycation: 7 Fun Things to Do While Staying Close to Home

By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 11:31 PM EST

Las Vegas is nicknamed not only "Sin City" but also as the "Entertainment Capital of the World." While it is best known for its massive casino-hotels, nightlife, and the slogan "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," the city can also be a great staycation travel destination.

Las Vegas has adapted its entertaining ways to accommodate families with younger children. Although parents may hit the casinos at night, during the day the entire family can enjoy numerous activities together. One travel tip for families on a budget is to check out the many package deals offered by resorts that bundle multiple attractions for a cheaper price.

VOTE NOW: Is Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval Doing a Good Job?

Here are seven great places for families on vacation in Las Vegas to visit together:

1. Adventure Canyon: Located at Buffalo Bills Hotel about 40 miles from the Las Vegas strip, this resort is "home to an array of spine-tingling, thrill-inducing rides." Adventure Canyon is a water log ride with a 35-foot drop. In addition to the cooling splash factor, riders are provided with electric guns to take out water gun wielding bandits during the adventure.

2. Cirque du Soleil: This theatrical and acrobatic entertainment company offers highly creative shows ranging from family friendly to adult orientated. While no one under the age of five is admitted, shows such as master of illusion Criss Angel's Believe and the Cirque du Soleil classic production Mystère provide exceptional family entertainment.

3. Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay: "At Shark Reef you can see all kinds — sawfish, giant rays, endangered green sea turtles, piranha, jellyfish and the rare golden crocodile, to name a few. In all, there are over 2,000 animals in 1.6 million gallons of water."

4. Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York: Located right off the Vegas strip, this rollercoaster features a "180-degree 'heartline' twist and dive maneuver, providing more than 1.4 million riders with heart-stopping action and excitement each year." The setting includes a replica of the New York harbor, and a model of the Statue of Liberty.

5. World Famous Bonnie Springs Ranch: Harkening back to days of the Old West, this 1840's ranch town offers haunted ghost town adventures, mock gunfights, a petting zoo, train rides and horseback riding at the Red Rock Stables. Families on a staycation can enjoy the "Best in Wild West Food," karaoke and Sunday and Monday night football at the town's restaurant.

6. Hershey's Chocolate World: This two-story Las Vegas travel attraction is chock-full of Hershey treats, mementos and even technology that allows visitors to send virtual Hershey's Kisses to friends and family. Visitors are encouraged to "create their own Hersey's happiness" via personalized chocolate wrappers and experimenting with Reese's combinations.

7. Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat: Located at the Mirage Hotel & Casino, this habitat is home to white tigers, black panthers, lions, leopards and dolphins. Families on vacation will enjoy the beautiful wildlife and the exotic jungle themed scenery while learning about the conservation efforts of Siegfried and Roy who have spent decades helping to save endangered animals.
