What if Global Warming Continues? 6 Articles That Paint Dire Picture

By    |   Friday, 06 February 2015 01:29 PM EST

Proponents of global warming believe that human activity has caused global average temperatures to rise and if they continue to do so, they will have a dire impact on the world. Climate change skeptics assert that the science of global warming is flawed, that there is no scientific consensus on the issue and that changes in global temperature are naturally cyclical.

Lending fuel to the global warming fire is a recent report from the World Meteorological Organization that ranked "2014 as the hottest year on record, as part of a continuing trend."

Here are six articles on global warming that paint a dire picture if warming continues:

ALERT: Is Global Warming a Hoax? Vote Now

1. According to the United Nations News Centre, the 21st century will be the hottest on record as global warming continues. High sea temperatures "have contributed to exceptionally heavy rainfall and floods in many countries and extreme drought in others. Twelve major Atlantic storms battered the United Kingdom in early months of 2014, while floods devastated much of the Balkans throughout May. The monthly precipitation over the Pacific side of western Japan for August 2014, meanwhile, was 301 per cent above normal — the highest since area-averaged statistics began in 1946."

2. BBC News Science & Environment reports that climate inaction will be catastrophic according to Secretary of State John Kerry. "Unless we act dramatically and quickly, science tells us our climate and our way of life are literally in jeopardy. Denial of the science is malpractice."

3. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a critical global warming assessment report in late 2014. If global temperatures continue to rise, climate change will "inflict 'severe, widespread, and irreversible impacts' on people and the natural world," reported The Guardian. In addition to environmental concerns, the IPCC report found an increased risk of war. "Climate change can indirectly increase risks of violent conflicts by amplifying well-documented drivers of these conflicts such as poverty and economic shocks."

4. Business Insider listed 25 devastating effects of climate change if global warming continues. Included in that list were a cost of "hundreds of billions of dollars a year" because of "asset destruction, forced relocations, droughts, and extinctions." In addition, dangerous diseases will spread, wildfires will burn up to "eight times as much land by 2100," and "136 of the world's most historic places could be lost to sea-level rise."

5. CNN reported on the phenomenon of 35,000 walruses in Alaska that were forced onto land due to dwindling sea ice. According to Lou Leonard, the vice president for climate change at the World Wildlife Fund, "As this ice dwindles, the Arctic will experience some of the most dramatic changes our generation has ever witnessed. This loss will impact the annual migration of wildlife through the region, threaten the long-term health of walrus and polar bear populations, and change the lives of those who rely on the Arctic ecosystem for their way of life."

6. Nick Vassar, the associate green editor at the Huffington Post wrote an article stating climate change is likely to be catastrophic, not just dangerous. Based on a study published in the journal of Nature, Vassar stated, "Aside from dramatic environmental shifts like melting sea ice, many of the ills of the modern world - starvation, poverty, war and disease — are likely to get worse as the planet warms."
