Girls With Guns: Traveling With Firearms To and From the Airport

By    |   Tuesday, 31 March 2015 04:23 PM EDT

Other than local laws, most people don't give much thought to traveling by car with their firearm. Girls with guns traveling by air to and from the airport may encounter a few more challenges though, and a bit more thought needs to be put into your travel arrangements ahead of time.

First, check with the airline you are traveling with to see what their policy is on carrying your firearm in your checked baggage. There will likely be special paperwork you will need to fill out for them as well, and you will need to declare your firearm to the airline representative.

When packing your firearm, make certain that you pack it unloaded, with the slide locked back, (if it's a semi-automatic) and in a hard case. Ammunition must be in its original box and in your checked bag.

Using a cable lock, secure the closed case to the frame of your luggage. This provides you with an added layer of security against theft by anyone who may come into contact with or be handling your luggage after it is no longer in your possession.

If at all possible, try to book a direct flight. If there are any flight delays with connections or problems that result in your being stranded in a gun-unfriendly state, you could find yourself in a complicated and costly legal nightmare.

Similar to the case of Greg Revell, a Utah gun owner who spent 10 days in jail after he got stranded at the New Jersey airport with an unloaded firearm he had legally checked in in Utah, according to Fox News. Booking a direct flight can alleviate this possibility altogether.

An alternative to girls with guns traveling by air with their firearm is to simply ship it ahead. If you will be attending a shooting school such as Gunsite or Roger's Shooting School, or shooting in a competitive match, the venue or school will often be able to accept them on your behalf.
