Hunting in Minnesota: 4 Things to Know Before Applying for a Hunting Permit for Your Kids

Hunting is a tradition passed on from generation to generation in the state of Minnesota. But before you take your kids to obtain a hunting permit, make sure you are aware of these four requirements.

Education Requirements - Hunting in Minnesota requires anyone over the age of 12 to hold a hunting firearm education certificate prior to obtaining a hunting license. The classes can be taken online, through correspondence, or in person. Those who choose to use the online option or correspondence course are also required to complete a field day of firearms training. As soon as your child starts taking the class, they can schedule their field day appointment. Before completing the education requirement, a child who is 12 or older can apply for an apprentice hunting license that allows them to hunt for two years without the safety requirement. After the two years are used (they do not have to be consecutive) the youth hunter must complete the education requirement to keep on hunting and obtain a regular hunting license. Children under the age of 12 are not required to complete the education requirement until they are older, but as soon as they turn 11, they can start attending hunter education courses. Classes fill up fast, so youth hunters are encouraged to sign up for a course as soon as they meet the age requirements.

Small Game License Requirement - Youth under the age of 16 are not required to possess a small game hunting license to hunt small game.
Turkey License Requirement - Children of all ages are required to obtain a turkey hunting license prior to hunting turkey.
Deer Hunting License Requirements - All youth must attend a required orientation if they intend to deer hunt. Youth that apply for the license will be given an orientation date. Adults must accompany children under the age of 18 when deer hunting. The bag limit is one deer for youth. For youth between the ages of 10 and 12, the free license must be carried the entire time they are hunting.
