Hunting in Missouri: 3 Animals To Hunt in the Summer

Summer is the season with the sparsest hunting in Missouri, with only a handful of eligible animals to take during the summer months of June, July, August, and September. However, dedicated hunters can keep their skills sharp and pursue some small game that prove to be a challenge while also offering hunters the opportunity to go after some different types of game than they would during the rest of the year.

Here are three animals that have open hunting seasons in Missouri during the summer:

1. Bullfrog - Never hunted bullfrogs before? Well, starting at the end of June until the end of October, hunters can fish or hunt bullfrog in Missouri. The daily bag limit is eight bullfrogs, while the possession limit is typically 16 bullfrogs. On bullfrog opening day, hunting begins at sunset and hunters are permitted to use up to a .22 rifle or pistol, bow, crossbow, pellet gun, or hand net. In addition, several fishing methods can also be used including gigs, snagging, or plain old fishing line, along with the use of artificial light. Hunters are allowed to release frogs that aren’t fatally injured, too. Green frogs also fall under the same rules and regulations according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

2. Squirrel - All summer long, squirrel hunters can enjoy taking up to 10 squirrels per day along with a 20-possession limit. The squirrel open hunting season starts in the spring and lasts throughout the fall and most of the winter months. A few tips from Field and Stream include hunting for beech and listening for falling debris.
3. Groundhog - Although Groundhog’s Day takes place in February, the real groundhog’s day for hunters starts in early May and continues every day of the summer and almost every day of the fall. There are absolutely no bag or possession limits for these furry animals, and hunters can sell and/or possess their pelts any time of the year. Hunters are required to possess either some type of small game or archery permit, or a trapping permit if that’s their preferred method of groundhog hunting.
