Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive storm ever to hit the United States as it swept across areas along the Gulf Coast in August 2005.
New Orleans took the brunt of the hurricane where the storm surge destroyed levees and caused extensive flooding.
An estimated 1,833 fatalities were reported with damages costing $108 billion, according to the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Millions of people were left homeless.
About 80 percent of New Orleans and nearby parishes were flooded for weeks and evacuations for thousands of people took place with the help of the National Guard.

Although national attention focused on New Orleans, other areas also suffered immense damage and deaths from Hurricane Katrina.
Here are five areas outside of New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina:
1. South Florida was hit by the hurricane when it was at Category 1 status and experienced some flooding. When Hurricane Katrina passed over Florida, it was reduced to a tropical storm, but it strengthened when it stalled over the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida suffered 14 deaths directly or indirectly related to the hurricane,
according to CNN.
2. Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, were devastated when the hurricane landed again as a Category 3 hurricane, reaching wind speeds of 125 miles per hour. The large storm surge of 10 to 28 feet caused severe damage in coastal Mississippi.
Hurricane Katrina caused 238 deaths in the state,
