Haifa is Israel’s third largest city with an interesting blend of historic districts, modern day neighborhoods, and famous landmarks. Home to the country’s largest port, Haifa has an active beach scene and is surrounded by Mount Carmel and the Mediterranean Sea.

Here are six must-see spots in Haifa:

Vote Now: Should the U.S. Continue to Support Israel?

1. Mount Carmel is often referred to as the “evergreen mountain” and is considered one of Israel’s most beautiful sights. With its proximity to the sea, Mount Carmel’s lush groves and 670 plant species make it an ideal location for family hiking. The mountain is also known for its varying rock and fossil formations.

2. The World Center of the Bahai Faith contributes to Haifa’s reputation for tolerance. The center is located on the slope of Mount Carmel and is famous for its magnificent gardens, including the kilometer-long Hanging Gardens. The center is home to a gold-domed Shrine of the Bab, which is burial place of the Bahai Faith’s founder.

3. The German Colony was founded in the 19th century by German Templars who came to establish a Christian community in the Holy Land and is located at the foot of the Bahai Gardens. The colony features well-preserved, quaint, charming stone houses, some with names of original residents etched on them.

4. Louis Promenade is a relaxed 20-minute walking path giving strollers a chance to rest on benches along the way. The promenade has a view of Haifa Bay and splits off onto various "step tours" leading back into the city.

5. Carmel Nature Reserve is known for year-round views of greenery and its intoxicating beauty. Within the reserve, the Khai-Bar Wildlife Preserve was established to reintroduce nearly extinct animals to nature.

6. The National Maritime Museum highlights the history of shipping in the Mediterranean basin, Red Sea, and Nile River. Collections include maritime ship remains and models, navigational maps and measuring instruments, plus a pirate exhibition.
