Safed is one of Israel’s four holy cities, along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tiberias, and is home to some famous landmarks.

Located in the northern Galilee region, Safed is the highest city in Israel and offers gorgeous views of the Sea of Galilee and Mount Hermon. Safed is known for being home to the mystical Kabbalah movement.

Here are six must-see spots in Safed:

Vote Now: Should the U.S. Continue to Support Israel?

1. The Safed Cemetery dates back centuries and is the gravesite for some of the most well-known rabbis in Jewish history. Best known for great scholars from the Middle Ages who were laid to rest there, the Safed Cemetery is believed to be the grave of Hosea the Prophet and other rabbinical leaders.

2. The Citadel (Metsuda) has ruins dating back to the time of the Crusaders, and situated in the center of Safed’s Old City, it’s an important urban landmark. Visitors can enjoy walking trails winding around Citadel Park and enjoy views of the Sea of Galilee to the east and Mount Meron to the west.

3. Gallery Street is shopping central in Safed. There, tourists can find art and souvenirs for any budget to take home.

4. The HaMeiri Cheese Shop is considered a must-visit for tourists in Safed. The shop offers cheese recipes dating back more than 150 years. Visitors often grab a loaf of bread and cheese and head out for a relaxing picnic overlooking the Galilee. Don’t miss the hundreds of original photos hanging on the building’s passageway which tell the story of the Jewish settlement of Safed over the past 200 years.

5. The Davidka Monument is a model of the weapon used by Jewish defenders of the city in the 1948 War of Independence. The area has been refurbished recently with seating for groups to learn the history of the 1948 war.

6. The Great Stairs is a lengthy staircase cutting the city into two distinct parcels. The staircase was used by the British to separate the Arab and Jewish quarters of the city before 1948.
