Magnesium is an essential mineral for the organs of the body, but diarrhea and upset stomach are common side effects of magnesium for some people. Taking the proper amount of helps avoid these symptoms.

Certain health conditions may lead to magnesium deficiencies, but the mineral is plentiful in such foods as whole grains, green vegetables, and nuts. Other sources include tofu, legumes, and soybean flour.

Although it’s rare to overdose on magnesium through foods, ingesting an excess amount of it may result in diarrhea. Too much magnesium often comes from taking large amounts of antacids or supplements.

Medications with magnesium also could lead to an overdose, so consulting with a doctor when taking additional magnesium could help avoid side effects such as diarrhea.

According to Livestrong, proper dosage of magnesium is 420 mg daily for men over age 30, and 320 for women. Men under 30 require 400 mg while women the same age need 310 mg a day.

Dr. Carolyn Dean, a medical doctor and nutritionist, advises taking three small doses of magnesium a day, instead of ingesting it at one time, to avoid diarrhea. She also recommends trying different types of magnesium to see what works best for your system.
