Magnesium: Migraine Miracle Cure?

By    |   Monday, 02 May 2016 05:35 PM EDT

Magnesium has the potential to stop, or greatly lessen, the excruciating pain and accompanying symptoms of migraines, without the harsh side effects of prescription drugs. Could this be a miracle cure?

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the exact cause of migraines is not completely known; however, it is believed that during a migraine the blood vessels in the brain dilate, increasing the amount of blood flow, in addition to causing chemical and nerve changes. Symptoms and triggers vary widely among migraine sufferers and are usually very debilitating.

Heathline reports that migraine sufferers are often low in magnesium. The site suggests taking between 200-600 milligrams of magnesium every day to potentially decrease the frequency of migraines. Magnesium is a mineral the body requires for strong bones and healthy muscle, nerve, heart, and immune system function.

Many people prefer alternative migraine treatments such as magnesium, says WebMD. Prescription drugs can cause uncomfortable side effects and are usually not safe for pregnant women to take.

Magnesium by itself can bring much-needed relief, however some people still require prescription medication and have found further relief when adding magnesium therapy. WebMD recommends people stick to magnesium therapy, at the right dose, for three months in order to appreciate the benefits.

In addition to receiving the recommended dose from supplements, there are a variety of food sources of magnesium, according to Healthline. These include green vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, whole grains, long-grain brown rice, bananas, yogurt, milk, and potatoes with skin.

The University of Maryland Medical Center cautions that some magnesium-rich foods can actually trigger migraines.

While triggers, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes look different for each person, the success of magnesium therapy shows promise for some migraine sufferers.
