Nebraska Gun Laws Provide Interesting Case Nationally

By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 11:31 PM EST

With state legislatures currently in full swing all across the nation, the topic of gun laws is sure to sprout up consistently. Some states are becoming models for other states’ gun laws, with most of those states tending to be more conservative. However, one state has some interesting laws that could provide some interesting national discussion.

Nebraska gun laws are some of the most relaxed in the U.S. The more liberal states will most likely not adopt a lot of the Nebraska gun laws ideas, but for Second Amendment supporters, Nebraska is a great model to point to in terms of gun laws.

VOTE NOW: Is Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts Doing a Good Job?

A vast majority of states in the union already honor Nebraska’s firearms permits, which means these states have looked at Nebraska’s system for obtaining firearms permits and determined that it matches or exceeds their own requirements. According to the National Rifle Association, the only states that don’t honor Nebraska’s firearms permits are California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

With so many states already honoring Nebraska gun laws, a case could be made that some of Nebraska’s laws should be adopted across the nation.

Despite gun laws that are so relaxed, violent crimes in Nebraska happen to 2.62 in 1,000 residents, according to Neighborhood Scout. The national median is 3.8 per 1,000 citizens. Second Amendment supporters will be quick to say that violent crimes are so far below the national media due to the fact that citizens are armed, while those on the left will be quick to refute those statistics.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the fact that Nebraska gun laws are relaxed and violent crime rates are a full point below the national median warrants a national discussion. Whether or not these laws can work on a broad, national scale is still up for debate, and many state legislatures would likely have strong opinions either way. But citizens who support easier access to guns would do well to research Nebraska gun laws and propose some changes to their local state legislator.
