5 Signs of Prostate Cancer You Should Never Ignore

By    |   Friday, 18 March 2016 11:41 AM EDT

Prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer in terms of prevalence among American men. Knowing the signs of prostate cancer could save your life.

According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, it is the prostate gland’s close proximity to the bladder that can cause these urinary symptoms when tumors press on the bladder or urethra.

SPECIAL: The One Thing You Should Do for Your Prostate Every Morning

1. More frequent urges to urinate during the night
2. A weak urine stream or trouble starting and stopping the flow of urine
3. A burning sensation or pain while urinating
4. Blood in the urine (hematuria)
5. Loss of bladder control

Mayo Clinic explains that in its early stages, prostate cancer will likely produce no symptoms at all.

While the medical community debates about whether or not routine prostate cancer screening’s benefits outweigh the risks, you may want to discuss whether screening would be helpful for you if you are at risk for prostate cancer or notice any of the above signs.

Urinary symptoms are quite often not caused by prostate cancer. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate is a much more common cause of urinary difficulties, says the American Cancer Society. It is still important to recognize them and discuss with your physician to decide which treatment plan is right for you.

Finally, there are other signs of advanced prostate cancer that occur if the cancer has become more severe and spread to other nearby areas of the body. According to the American Cancer Society, these include trouble getting or maintaining an erection, and pain in the hips, back, or ribs if the cancer has spread to the bones. If the cancer is putting pressure on the spinal cord, you may experience weakness or numbness in the legs and feet and loss of bowel control.

Early detection of prostate cancer could include a digital rectal exam along with any number of blood tests to determine the likelihood of cancer. Knowing the signs and paying attention to them is crucial to prostate cancer treatment.
