Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, is a health concern for men, and some of its symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter drugs.
The prostate gland naturally grows throughout life, and by the time men reach age 50, BPH is the
most common health issue they face, Healthline said. Conventional and herbal remedies are available without a prescription to help alleviate the symptoms.

First, the herbal supplement saw palmetto is widely regarded for its ability to relieve some symptoms of enlarged prostate.
ABC News referenced a recent study in Urology in which 85 men were followed for a six-month period. The men who were given saw palmetto experienced a reduction in symptoms compared with those who received a placebo. However, much more research needs to be done in order for the mainstream medical community to consider it a serious treatment option for BPH.
According to Healthline, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation. There is some research that indicates that men who routinely take NSAIDs may be improving their prostate health.

Progressive Health described several other supplements that may prove helpful in managing symptoms of enlarged prostate. These include pygeum, stinging nettle, selenium, vitamin C, and vitamin E. They recommend looking for a supplement product targeted to prostate health that combines many of these extracts and vitamins.
Although there are many over-the-counter drugs and supplements available for enlarged prostate, Healthline cautioned that the American Urological Association does not advocate their use for chronic BPH. No over-the-counter drugs should be used as a substitute for a consultation with your physician. Healthline asserted that if you’d like to try these supplements, you should also contact your doctor. If your symptoms persist and are interfering with your quality of life, you may need to undergo a prostate exam and your physician may recommend a prescription medication.
