In the debate over self-defense, Wisconsin gun laws have garnered national attention. The sheriff of Milwaukee County has urged people to get their concealed carry permits to help out law enforcement. Carrying a gun openly, whether loaded or unloaded, is legal according to Wisconsin gun laws.
In a recent Milwaukee County Sheriff election, Sheriff David Clarke Jr. had to face national dollars trying to unseat him for his stance in support of Second Amendment rights.

According to
Fox News, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg aired a series of ads in an attempt to unseat the sheriff. It didn’t work. The group Independence USA PAC took on the sheriff as part of their mission to fight for tighter gun control.
Wisconsin is among states that have lessened gun control laws in recent years, and restored the rights of citizens to carry concealed handguns.
Since 1998, the
Wisconsin constitution has protected the right to bear arms in a wide variety of specific contexts. It reads, “The people have the right to keep and bear arms for security, defense, hunting, recreation, or any other lawful purpose.”
It was the 2011
Wisconsin Personal Protection Act that allowed the legalization of concealed carry in the state. According to the National Rifle Association, Wisconsin was the 49th state to pass this kind of legislation.

The
law also strengthened gun rights for people who do not have a conceal carry license. It is legal to have a loaded, uncased handgun inside a car. As long as it is in plain view, the individual carrying that gun does not need to have a license. People are also allowed to carry a concealed weapon at their business or home without a license.
Some gun advocates are also pushing for Wisconsin concealed carry permit owners to have the right to carry their handguns on school property. Nik Clark, president of a group called Wisconsin Carry told
Wisconsin Public Radio they are pushing for the elimination of current laws that make it a felony to carry a gun onto school property.
Clark cites the quarter-million concealed carry owners who are open for potential prosecution if they don’t unload and put their gun in a case before driving on to school grounds, even if they are just picking up their children from school.
The NRA backed Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s bid for re-election.
The NRA said the backing was deserved because the governor took the state from being one of the last states without a concealed carry permit to having some of the most “permissive” laws in the country.
