Accused murderer Rex Heuermann requested numerous separate trials for the seven women he was charged with killing at New York's Gilgo Beach, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
Heuermann's lawyers claim that if the murders are tried together, he could be unfairly convicted due to a "cumulative effect."
"Much of the evidence will involve lengthy testimony, multiple exhibits and be of a technical nature," Heuermann lawyer Sabato Caponi wrote in court papers Wednesday, according to Newsday. "A trial encompassing all 10 counts would unjustifiably create a strong risk that the jury will be unable to segregate the evidence by its separate and distinct relevance to each individual incident."
Caponi also argued that the cases of the seven women are too different — with the deaths having taken place between 1993 to 2010, as well as there being a "substantial disparity" in the evidence in the cases.
The office of the Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney previously said it would fight against any attempt to separate the case into multiple trials.
Heuermann, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, was initially charged with first- and second-degree murder for the 2009 and 2010 deaths of three women in July 2023. Additional charges were added the next year for the murders of four other women.
Heuermann, a New York architect who is in jail pending trial, is due back in court Jan. 29.
