House Republicans Seek Savings to Fund Tax Cuts

By    |   Friday, 24 January 2025 12:57 PM EST

To fund massive tax cuts, House Republican committee chairs proposed spending cuts and budget savings that could add up to $3 trillion, Punchbowl News reported.

Punchbowl obtained presentations that House committee chairs made during a closed-door Republican conference meeting this week.

Options include curtailing student-loan programs to large-scale Medicaid cuts to immigration-related fees, Punchbowl reported.

The Energy and Commerce Committee is eyeing up to $2 trillion of cuts, including per capita caps for Medicaid, limiting federal money sent to states along with implementing Medicaid work requirements, and pharmacy benefit manager reforms, Punchbowl reported.

Student-loan cuts include lowering the amount that can be obtained, along with restrictions on loan eligibility for non-citizens, according to Punchbowl. Another idea included having colleges pay fees for unpaid loans.

The House Agriculture Committee is looking at up to $250 billion in cuts, including mandating states pay more for SNAP benefits and expanding work requirements, Punchbowl said.

The Natural Resources Committee has proposed oil and gas lease sales, mining and energy-related measures, and forestry and timber sales, Punchbowl reported.

Up to $27 billion in savings is being eyed by the Judiciary Committee by raising fees on asylum applications and annual renewal, detention, parole and visa overstays, according to Punchbowl.

The Transportation and Infrastructure panel is looking at raising fees for electric vehicles to go to the Highway Trust Fund, Punchbowl said.

With a slim 217-215 margin, every House Republican will have to approve of every cut if Democrats stand united in opposition.
