Trump Admin Shuts Down App Used by Migrants

By    |   Monday, 20 January 2025 03:38 PM EST

Minutes after President Donald Trump was sworn into office Monday, administration officials shut down a mobile app that migrants had used to make appointments at the southern border.

The Customs and Border Protection app was created by the Biden administration in early 2023 and gave legal entry to nearly 1 million migrants with online appointments.

As of Monday afternoon, all appointments were canceled.

A CBP Field Ops post on Instagram said that as of noon ET, "the functionalities of CBP One that previously allowed undocumented aliens to submit advance information and schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available. All appointments have been cancelled."

The deactivation of the CBP app was part of nearly a dozen national security directives Trump planned to take on his first day back in office.

Before the Biden administration cracked down on the migrant crisis in the months before the Nov. 5 election, the last full month with fewer than 100,000 southern border encounters was January 2021, the month former President Joe Biden was sworn in.

The CBP One app had allowed migrants to:

  • Check border wait times.
  • Apply for a provisional I-94 entry.
  • Request an inspection of agriculture or biological products.
  • Submit a travelers manifest for bus operators.

The app allowed 1,450 migrants a day to schedule a time to present themselves at a port of entry and seek asylum through U.S. immigration courts, The New York Times reported.

A former Department of Homeland Security official told the Times that around 30,000 migrants had appointments to enter the U.S. through the app as of Monday morning.
