Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., who President Donald Trump praised this week for his work on an executive order to stop offshore wind turbine projects on the East Coast, said on Newsmax Friday that he's pleased with the quick action that was taken.
"I always appreciate the president," Van Drew told "Newsline." "We've worked a lot together. And let me say this: He's 'promises made, promises kept.' We've been talking about this for years."
On his first day in office Monday, Trump signed an executive order for a temporary national moratorium on new federal leases or renewed existing leases for wind turbine projects offshore or on dry land.
The six-month order took effect Tuesday and will have a major impact on New Jersey, where offshore wind turbine plans have come under strong debate.
"[Trump] said when he got in, he was going to do something with this to stop this thing and reevaluate it," Van Drew said.
He explained that there were two important parts to Trump's order.
One, which Van Drew's office worked on, was to examine existing leases granted by former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama to determine whether they had been done legally and "made sense," he said.
The stay allows officials to examine wind power to determine if it makes sense "and would be good for our fishermen, good for our tourism, good for our [tax]payers, and most importantly, would we be paying through the nose with all the huge, massive subsidies that had to be given to them?" he added.
The second part, he added, "was to stop all new leases from going until this complete review was made by cabinet-level positions."
"I'm proud to be a part of it [and] appreciative to the president for keeping his word," Van Drew said.
