Rasmussen: Democrat Voters Still Back Schumer

By    |   Wednesday, 26 March 2025 12:45 PM EDT

A majority of Democrat voters say they approve of how Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., handled the spending agreement with Republicans, according to Rasmussen Reports.

Schumer recently helped pass a GOP-led spending bill that averted a government shutdown. The move upset many progressives and liberal lawmakers.

Schumer said Sunday, "I'm not stepping down," amid calls by some Democrats for him to be replaced by a leader who will fight more forcefully against President Donald Trump and his policies.

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of likely Democrat voters said they approve of how Schumer handled the spending agreement in the Senate, including 32% who said they strongly approved, Rasmussen Reports found.

Only 26% of Democrat voters said they disapproved of how Schumer acted, and 9% said they were not sure.

Rasmussen results also showed that 70% of Republicans and 61% voters not affiliated with either major party approved of Schumer's actions regarding the spending bill.

The Rasmussen survey also asked Democrat voters the question: "Which is closer to your opinion, that Chuck Schumer is a valuable leader for Senate Democrats, or that Senate Democrats need to get rid of Chuck Schumer?"

Fifty-two percent of Democrats said Schumer is a valuable leader for Senate Democrats, while 33% said the chamber's party members need to get rid of the minority leader, and 15% said they were not sure.

Overall, 41% of likely voters acknowledged Schumer as a valuable leader for Senate Democrats, 36% said the chamber's party members need to oust him, and 23% remained unsure.

Among likely voters, 37% identifying as white, 56% as Black, 38% as Hispanic and 53% as another minority considered Schumer a valuable leader for Senate Democrats.

Overall, 40% of likely voters said they view Schumer favorably, including 13% with a very favorable impression. Schumer was viewed unfavorably by 45% of voters, including 28% with a very unfavorable opinion. Among Democrat voters, 53% said they have a favorable view of Schumer.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey was conducted March 20 and 23-24 among 1,106 likely voters. The margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
