Trump Meets With GOP Moderates on Tax Bill

By    |   Wednesday, 22 January 2025 02:22 PM EST

President Donald Trump on Wednesday met with several moderate House Republicans to work out an agreement on a state and local tax deduction as part of a larger tax bill, Politico reports.

Trump met with Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y.; Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb.; and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., on Wednesday afternoon to discuss a proposed bill to extend the 2017 tax cuts championed by Trump and other tax measures.

Trump "likes meeting with everybody," Bacon told reporters ahead of the gathering. "You can tell; he sleeps four hours a day, he's like nonstop on the phone."

He added, "I think he wants to build that relationship."

Politico notes that the three legislators meeting with Trump all recently won elections in closely-fought races and could be reluctant to support some of the hard-line measures proposed for the legislation and that Lawler has been particularly vocal about his support for raising the SALT cap.

"I will never support a tax bill that does not lift a cap on SALT," Lawler said at a Politico Playbook event before the meeting. "We're going to have to work through it as a conference. This will be done through reconciliation. And ultimately, as the President said, we're going to have one big beautiful bill."
He added, "In a midterm election, this issue is going to matter in states like New York and California, and Democrats know that."
