Flynn's Resignation Sparks Calls for Classified Congressional Briefing

Democratic Reps. John Conyers Jr., of Michigan and Elijah Cummings of Maryland are calling for a classified briefing for Congress on Michael Flynn after his sudden resignation as national security adviser, The Hill reports.

Conyers and Cummings are the ranking members of the Judiciary and Oversight committees.

"We were shocked and dismayed to learn this evening of reports that three weeks ago, U.S. law enforcement officials warned the White House Counsel that General Flynn had provided false information to the public about his communications with the Russian government, but that the Trump administration apparently did nothing about it," the two said in a statement.

"The reality is General Flynn was unfit to be the national security adviser, and should have been dismissed three weeks ago.

Flynn resigned after reports he misled senior White House officials about phone conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, The Hill noted.

"Now, we in Congress need to know who authorized his actions, permitted them, and continued to let him have access to our most sensitive national security information despite knowing these risks," the two lawmakers said.

"We need to know who else within the White House is a current and ongoing risk to our national security."

The Democrats claimed Republicans was turning "a blind eye to their constitutional duty to conduct oversight on these issues."

Meanwhile, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking member of the House Permanent Subcommittee on Intelligence said Flynn had always been "a poor choice" to be national security adviser, CBS News reports.

He urged further investigation into contacts between members of Trump's presidential campaign and the Kremlin, according to the network news.
