Report: Killer Used Navigation App to Track NYPD Officers

Tuesday, 23 December 2014 01:29 PM EST

Cop killer Ismaaiyl Brinsley was using a traffic and navigation app known as Waze to track police movements before he killed two NYPD officers, according to Breaking911.

Brinsley had been using the app to keep track of two officers who were almost 4 miles away from him in Staten Island, New York, since the beginning of December, Breitbart reported.

At one stage he thanked a friend of his named “Nita boo” on Instagram for pointing out that the app is not “updated in real time.” and thus is not “reliable.”

Brinsley posted a screen grab from the app on his Instagram page, which has since been taken down. In another Instagram post, Brinsley had vowed that he would put "wings on pigs."

Smartphone applications monitoring police activity have grown in popularity in recent years as the costs have dipped and the apps have become more accessible to average Americans, Breitbart reported.

But legal scholars have claimed that even listening to a police scanner radio in some states may not be legal for a private citizen, according to Breitbart.

On Saturday afternoon, Brinsley murdered NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos execution-style as they sat in their police cruiser in Brooklyn. A few minutes later he killed himself.

The cop killings have been blamed on the racial unrest across the country after grand juries refused to hand down indictments in the controversial chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York and the shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

Following a series of demonstrations in New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio has pleaded for a pause in the protests amid his widening rift with NYPD officers who accuse him of creating a climate of mistrust that contributed to the execution of the two officers.
