Sen. Jeff Sessions says he's okay with Donald Trump possibly softening his hardline stance on illegal immigrants who've been in the country for years with issue.
"Donald Trump is wrestling with that issue," Sessions told reporters before a Trump rally in Texas, The Hill reports.
"I fundamentally believe that the first and foremost priority is to fix the unlawful immigration. That's got to stop. And only once that's done, then you can begin to talk about what we should do in proper way for people who've been here a long time."
Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that there could be "a softening" on his immigration policies for longtime immigrants who've assimilated into the nation's fabric — people who in the past he said would be ejected from the country no matter what.
On Tuesday he indicated he may be open to some changes in immigration laws, noting, "We're not looking to hurt people."
Sessions insisted that Trump is not easing his overall policy on illegal immigrants.
"He didn't soften his position on ending the illegality and creating a lawful system that protects the interests of our national security from terrorists and also doesn't flood the labor market with more workers than we've got jobs for," Sessions said.
