Donald Trump’s meteoric rise to the top spot among the 17 Republicans vying to become the next president is good for the entire GOP, candidate Ben Carson said during a stop at Sylvia’s restaurant in Harlem, according to the
New York Observer.
"I think he’s bringing more people into it," Carson told a gathering of reporters. "I think he’s getting people excited who have, you know, felt that nobody’s listening to them and that nothing’s gonna change, so that’s good."
In a
new CNN/ORC poll, Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, places second to the outspoken billionaire in Iowa (22 percent to 14 percent), a key early voting state.
The Daily News reports that during Wednesday's stop in Harlem, Carson "slammed the Democratic Party for luring minority voters with condescending promises of political giveaways that lead to a reliance on government," suggesting that Democrats have "subscribed to
the Lyndon Johnson philosophy."
"Lyndon Johnson said if you give those 'n-words' such and such, they'll vote for us for the next 200 years," he said.
The soft-spoken Carson also attacked the left for parroting a message of weakness and dependence.
"You’ve got certain people saying,
'There, there you poor little thing, you can’t take care of yourself. We’re gonna take care of you' and they’ve gotten people to believe they can’t survive on their own, which is absolutely ridiculous," Carson told the Observer.
"We never will succeed by saying, 'Oh he’s got this, let’s take his and give it [away].' That doesn’t work. That’s called socialism. That’s not what made America into a great nation."
