The Cincinnati Enquirer announced in an editorial published Friday it is breaking an almost 100-year streak of endorsing Republicans for president by backing Hillary Clinton.
Calling the current election "not a traditional race," the Enquirer said Clinton is the only choice in its eyes to serve in the Oval Office.
"Our country needs calm, thoughtful leadership to deal with the challenges we face at home and abroad," the editorial reads. "We need a leader who will bring out the best in all Americans, not the worst.
"That's why there is only one choice when we elect a president in November: Hillary Clinton."
The paper's reasons for throwing its official support behind Clinton include her willingness to work with Republicans when she was a senator, helping Sept. 11 first responders via legislation, and standing up for LGBT rights.
"Clinton, meanwhile, was a competent secretary of state, with far stronger diplomatic skills than she gets credit for," the editorial reads. "Yes, mistakes were made in Benghazi, and it was tragic that four Americans lost their lives in the 2012 terror attacks on the U.S. consulate there. But the incident was never the diabolical conspiracy that Republicans wanted us to believe, and Clinton was absolved of blame after lengthy investigations."
The paper acknowledged Clinton's issues with her private email server, her unwillingness to hold press conferences, and the corruption allegations surrounding her family's foundation.
Trump, however, is a far worse candidate, the paper's editorial board concludes.
"We've condemned his childish insults; offensive remarks to women, Hispanics and African-Americans; and the way he has played on many Americans' fears and prejudices to further himself politically," the editorial reads.
"Trump brands himself as an outsider untainted by special interests, but we see a man utterly corrupted by self-interest. His narcissistic bid for the presidency is more about making himself great than America. Trump tears our country and many of its people down with his words so that he can build himself up. What else are we left to believe about a man who tells the American public that he alone can fix what ails us?"
The Enquirer is not alone in breaking Republican tradition to back Clinton. Dozens of high-profile members of the GOP are switching sides in November to vote for her.
A new Bloomberg poll, meanwhile, showed high-earning Americans are breaking tradition and backing Clinton.
